Adam heard about the Personal Best
programme and thought it sounded like a good opportunity for him. It
also sounded fun, and the commitment of 6 hours a day, 2 days a week for 9 weeks,
sounded like something he could tackle. As a full-time father to his 3
sons, Adam had been busy
raising his family, but was conscious of the
need to find employment in order to continue being a good role model to his boys.
Adam had self esteem issues but was is
determined to set a good example; hoping the course would help him
achieve full time employment. Adam really enjoyed his time on the
programme, attributing the success of the course
to the tutors and ex-players, who are mentors for the
participants. Adam says; "They actually care, and they are so inspiring.
Some good blokes, giving their spare time to the community- I hope I can
be as committed as them!"
Adam is looking to the future now, and
starts a BTEC Level 3 in Sports in late September, at Brighton and Hove
Albion (Albion in the Community) for 1 day a week, for a year.
It’s been a really positive experience for Adam, who now says
that he has more confidence as well as a taste for further learning.
Adam comments; "I got a lot
more from the course than I expected to!
It’s also a good environment for learning,
based at a football club rather than a
classroom in a big college. It’s a relaxed
environment, which really suited me, with approachable tutors who want you
to succeed. We
were even given the opportunity to play football together and one day
visited the beach volleyball Centre where Olympic teams will train in
2012. I’d never played volleyball before and it was a great experience!"
