Jayme's Story

Jayme joined the SO2 project run by Nacro because her behaviour in class was not at an acceptable level. Her attendance at school was less than 50% and her grades were very low.

Jayme needed to learn how to control her anger and deal with difficult situations without shouting and displaying attitude. She wanted to find ways to make school enjoyable and resolve any issues with teachers. She also needed to tackle her binge drinking at weekends, and develop other social avenues.

Initially, Jayme was hard to engage; when spoken to she would turn her back or refuse to answer, and she had very little respect for the people around her. Her mentor tried to find common interests between them, and over a 2 week period Jayme began to open up and discussed issues including her police cautions and and binge drinking. At the end of the 4 week course Jayme was fully engaged in all activities and able to discuss issues she had with school and home life. She also realised that her issues of fighting and bad temper were related to her binge drinking. Jayme felt able to talk more about problems and issues she had, and experience things she felt she would not have had the opportunity to if she had not been on the SO2 project.

Jayme's attendance at school is now nearly 90%, and her grades have got better since joining the SO2 project. She is more engaged during lessons, completing home work on time, and enjoying her time at school once more. Jayme has stopped the binge drinking at weekends and has found this to have a positive influence on her behaviour when faced with difficult situations. Jayme is hoping to join a local kick boxing class and is currently waiting to apply for the army.
