Luke's Story

Luke initially joined the Response to Redundancy programme run by Chichester College to obtain a CSCS card and refresh his site knowledge, hoping that this would improve his chances of finding work. He already possessed a basic knowledge of Health and Safety, but without a CSCS card it was impossible to find work, and he felt unable to apply for roles he would be capable of filling.

Luke reported that he really bonded with the tutor, and said that he "didn't just teach the subject; he knew the industry and really related to us". Luke was really pleased with the course; he found it was better than he had expected, based on his previous experience with training. He said that the tutor made him feel he had so much more potential than he had thought of himself.

Luke states: “I’m not a skilled tradesman but I felt this was a step in the right direction.  I have attended other computer based courses, but felt the support and advice given was inadequate.  I also felt the course content was irrelevant compared to this course.”

Luke's main aim on leaving the course was to get a job. Upon leaving the course, Luke said he feels he has a greater understanding of the industry and the jobs available, and intends to explore different avenues of work. He is now using the Job Centre and all available resources to look for work, feeling this is the first step towards finding employment.  He has learnt he has more options than originally thought.

Luke intends to research further training courses, stating "I really enjoyed this one, and would like to build upon my newfound knowledge. I don't want to be a 'grunt' any more; I can see now that I have options and great potential. I'm looking forward to the future!".
